24 February, 2010:
Recent Rain Events - What does it mean?
Over the past few weeks or so, Arkaroola has received in excess of 60mm of rain and for the first time in many years the countryside is looking absolutely spectacular.
The plains, between the eastern escarpment of the Flinders Ranges and Lake Frome - immediately east of Italowie Gorge on the main Copley to Arkaroola Road - (east of Nepabunna) - are a brilliant green as far as the eye can see.
Griselda Hill and surrounding mountains and hills on Arkaroola are tinged with stunning green, offering a wonderful contrast to the ochres and other warm earth colours normally associated with these areas. Parakeelya, a succulent which has small pink flowers - and also a wonderful food source for wildlife, is abundant, along with a host of native grasses.
During late February 2010, watercourses between Nepabunna and Italowie Gorge were still running fresh, clear water and the countryside is probably the best it has been for at least 15 years or more.
What does all this mean?
Well, we believe the next few weeks will see an abundance of wildflowers that haven't been seen in many years - if you are thinking of a trip to Arkaroola, then we would suggest any time over the coming two months, and possibly more, would be a wonderful time to witness this rare flowering event. It will be a must see experience.
